Quick answer

High-speed trains run from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia in about 2h15 to 2h30, with Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and with Italo. Book a few weeks ahead: our cheapest Frecciarossa fare was €19.90 five weeks out against €49 for the next day. The regional route costs a fixed €22.40 but takes about 3h25 with a change at Verona.

Prices and timetables below were checked on 5 October 2026 on the official Trenitalia booking engine and on Italo’s route page. Fares on high-speed trains change all the time, so treat them as a guide to what you will see, not a quote.

How long the train from Milan to Venice takes

Every useful train leaves from Milano Centrale, Milan’s main station. Some also stop at Milano Porta Garibaldi or Rogoredo, and some Italo trains at Rho Fiera, which can save you a trip across town if you are staying nearby.

Train Journey time Trains per day Change
Italo About 2h15 7 Direct
Frecciarossa (Trenitalia) 2h27-2h34 13 (sample Tuesday) Direct
EuroCity (sold by Trenitalia) 2h37-2h39 2 Direct
Regional (Trenord + Trenitalia) About 3h25 Roughly hourly Verona Porta Nuova

On the sample Tuesday, the first Frecciarossa left at 7:15am and the last at 8:45pm. Regional connections ran roughly from 6:25am to 8:25pm.

Frecciarossa or Italo

Two companies run high-speed trains on this line. Trenitalia is the state railway and its high-speed brand is Frecciarossa. Italo is a private company that only runs high-speed trains. They use the same tracks and the same stations, and the trip takes about the same time.

The practical difference is how many trains you can choose from and what each charges on your date. Frecciarossa had 13 direct trains on our sample day, and Italo’s official page lists 7. Some websites claim Italo runs 18 a day to Venice; the official page says 7. Check both before you book, because the cheaper one changes from date to date.

A ticket is only valid with the company you bought it from. If you miss an Italo train, you cannot hop on the next Frecciarossa with the same ticket.

How much the Milan to Venice train costs

We searched the official Trenitalia site on 5 October 2026 for two dates: Tuesday 6 October (the next day) and Tuesday 10 November (about five weeks ahead). The prices are the lowest fare shown per train for one adult, one way, usually in Standard class.

Train Next day (6 Oct 2026) 5 weeks ahead (10 Nov 2026)
Frecciarossa €49-52 €19.90-22.90
Regional via Verona €22.40 €22.40

Booking about five weeks ahead cut the cheapest Frecciarossa fare from €49 to €19.90, a drop of about 60%. The two daily EuroCity trains cost €31.90-45. Italo advertises fares “from €14.90” on its route page; we did not search Italo’s booking engine for these dates, so expect to pay more than that on busy days.

The regional train: when it makes sense

The cheap-looking option is the regional route. You take a Trenord regional (RE) from Milano Centrale to Verona Porta Nuova, then a Trenitalia Regionale Veloce (RV) to Venice. The whole trip takes about 3h25 and costs €22.40 on any day, with no advance discount and no surcharge for buying late.

For most visitors it is the worse deal. A Frecciarossa booked a few weeks ahead costs about the same and gets you there an hour sooner, without a change. The change at Verona can be tight: on the 8:25am sample train it was about five minutes.

The regional train wins in one case: you are buying on the day or the day before, and high-speed fares are at €49 or more. Regional tickets also never sell out, because they have no seat reservations. On a busy day you may stand for part of the trip.

How to buy Milan to Venice train tickets

Start with the official channels.

  • Trenitalia: trenitalia.com or the Trenitalia app sells Frecciarossa, EuroCity and regional tickets, including the Trenord leg of the regional route.
  • Italo: italotreno.com or the Italo app sells Italo trains only.
  • At Milano Centrale: self-service machines and ticket offices sell both.

For a regional ticket you can also skip the purchase entirely. Validators marked TAP&TAP let you tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card to buy a single adult second-class regional ticket.

If you would rather see Trenitalia and Italo side by side in one English-language app, a reseller such as Trainline lists both. Resellers usually add a booking fee, so compare the final price with the official sites before you pay.

Arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia

High-speed and regional trains end at Venezia Santa Lucia, the terminus in Venice’s historic center. You walk out of the station onto the Grand Canal, so from here you continue on foot or by water. When you book, check that the arrival station on your ticket reads “Venezia S. Lucia”.

Validation rules: regional vs high-speed tickets

High-speed tickets (Frecciarossa, Italo, EuroCity) are for a specific train and an assigned seat. You do not stamp them. Show the PDF or QR code to the conductor on board.

Regional tickets depend on how you bought them:

  • Paper ticket from a machine or office: you must validate it in the station machine at your departure station before you board, by 11:59pm on the date printed. You then have 4 hours to finish the trip. An unvalidated paper ticket gets you fined on board.
  • Digital regional ticket from the Trenitalia app or website: no check-in needed. It activates automatically at the scheduled departure of the train you chose, and you can change the time as often as you like until then.
  • Electronic Regional Ticket, sold by some channels: no validation, valid for 4 hours from the departure time you chose. It carries your name, so bring ID.

Luggage on the train to Venice

Luggage is free on both operators.

  • Trenitalia does not currently enforce a size or number limit. Bags go in the overhead racks, under the seats or in the racks at the end of the car, and you have to be able to lift them yourself. Trenitalia announced size limits in 2024 and suspended them just before they took effect on 1 March 2024. They could come back, so check before you travel.
  • Italo has no limit on the number of bags. In Smart class, cases up to 75 x 53 x 30 cm are allowed, and larger luggage is allowed in Prima and Club Executive. Medium cases go overhead, and there are racks for large luggage at the end of each car.

The same booking advice applies to the other two big routes from Milano Centrale. Florence is the shortest high-speed trip, see our guide to the Milan to Florence train. Rome has the most departures and the biggest price gap between booking early and late, covered in the Milan to Rome train guide.
